SEKOU LUMUMBA | DRUMS

about sekou...
Seven year old Sekou was playing in his family's back yard down in Trinidad when one of his toy cars got stuck in a
stack of bricks about twice his size. He told his mom about it, and she promptly told him to forget it...it was lost in there.
It was one of his favorites, and he wasn't willing to let it go, so... he went back, pulled out a brick near the bottom…and subsequently
brought the entire pile down on himself. He got banged up pretty badly; the worst injury being a hole in his right knee that went straight to the
bone (the scar's still there). But because of his stubborn ass nature, he got his HotWheels back.
Sekou picked up drums at age 16, because some friends he hung with were into them. He really didn't like them much for the first year,
till he saw he could play things others couldn't at the time. As he was learning about this new found interest, he discovered bands like Fishbone,
Bad Brains, 247-Spyz; bands that taught him that being black and playing music didn't mean he had to only play hip-hop, r n'b or blues.
He soon developed a taste for bands like Metallica, Faith No More, Soundgarden, Slayer, Led Zeppelin and the like. Fast-forward to a couple years later...
|
He started playing in a punk rock band, then over the years slowly graduated to other forms of music; R'n'B, Rock, Metal, House,
Drum n' Bass , Funk and Ska. Along the way he's been fortunate enough to have played with, and been schooled by some exceptionally
gifted musicians and vocalists...and he continues to put those valuable lessons to use whenever he's behind the drumkit.
Sekou has come a long way from the yard he used to play in, but he's still the thick-headed kid when it comes to playing music....
Always trying things he shouldn't, knowing that if it pays off he'll be rewarded with a toy car.
